Staff + Faculty + Sessionals Parking FAQ
Quick answers for Emily Carr staff, faculty and sessional employees about requesting parking, payroll deduction, paying in advance, registering your vehicle, getting into the garage and parking tickets. Can’t find your answer below? Submit a request through the Service Desk.
Question 01
Where do I park with employee parking access?
Park only in the ECU designated parking areas on level P2. Vehicles parked outside this area may be ticketed. Your parking access is registered to your licence plate — there is no pass or hang tag to display, and no reserved spot. All ECU parking is first come, first served. Do not park in the visitor parking spaces 205–216; these are reserved for visitors and guests only.
Question 02
Where do I park if I’m paying for daily or hourly parking?
You can park in any unreserved parking spot on level P1. If you are paying for daily or hourly parking, do not park in the spots on level P2 that have signs that say “Reserved for Emily Carr”. These reserved spots are for community members that pay for monthly or term parking.
Question 03
Can I park in any Reserved for Emily Carr spot if I’m paying for daily parking?
No. You must park in an unreserved parking spot on level P1.
Question 04
Can I pay for daily parking on campus?
Parking fees can be paid through the payment terminal located in the parking lot or on the app.
Question 05
How do I request employee parking access?
Submit a Request Service through the Service Desk. Parking is limited, and submitting a request does not guarantee that access will be available — requests are reviewed based on current capacity and operational considerations. Please expect a response within approximately 4 business days.
If you are a sessional employee and your teaching schedule is term-based, note your term start and end dates in your request so Facilities can align your parking arrangement accordingly.
Question 06
How do staff and faculty pay for parking?
Staff and faculty pay for parking through an ongoing monthly payroll deduction. Once your access is approved, Payroll adds the deduction to your pay — you do not pay in advance. The current employee deduction is $96 per month.
Question 07
How do temporary staff and sessional instructors pay for parking?
Temporary staff and sessional instructors do not pay through payroll deduction. Submit a Request Service and then pay in advance using any of the following options:
• Online bill payment — from a Canadian bank, add Emily Carr University as a payee and use your ID number as the account number.
• In person — at the Cashier/Student Payments Office at Financial Services by the East Sculpture Gallery, Level 2 on the east side of the building. Open Monday–Friday, 9:00am–4:15pm. Debit, Visa, MasterCard, or cheque.
• By phone — call 604-629-4515, Monday–Friday, 9:00am–4:15pm. Visa or MasterCard only.
Further questions about payments? Email cashier@ecuad.ca.
Do not start parking until you receive the email from Facilities confirming your vehicle has been registered with the parking management company.
Question 08
I’m a sessional instructor — can I get free parking?
There is no free parking available at Emily Carr, including for sessional instructors. All parking on campus is paid — either through an ongoing arrangement or by paying the daily or hourly rate.
Question 09
Can I freeze my monthly payroll deduction while I’m away?
Yes. If you are away for a month or more, your monthly payroll deduction can be suspended. Submit a Request Service so Facilities can coordinate the change with Payroll and hold your parking access.
Question 10
How do I extend or cancel my parking?
Submit a Request Service with the change you need. After your parking is cancelled or your arrangement ends, vehicles parked without valid authorization may be ticketed or towed.
Question 11
Can I share my parking access if I only drive sometimes?
Parking access is registered to your licence plate and cannot be shared, lent, or transferred to another person. Occasional drivers should pay for daily or hourly parking and park in an unreserved spot on level P1.
Question 12
How do I update my registered vehicle?
Submit a Request Service with your new vehicle details as soon as possible so parking records stay current. Double-check your licence plate — enforcement matches your plate exactly, and a single wrong character can result in a ticket.
Question 13
What if I’m driving a different vehicle?
Only the vehicle registered to your parking is authorized. If you are driving a different vehicle — even temporarily — submit a Request Service first so we can register it with the parking management company. Plate changes can take a short time to take effect in their system.
Question 14
I got a parking ticket — what do I do?
If you were ticketed while you were authorized to park, do not pay it. Submit a Request Service with the ticket number, the ticket date, and the location where you parked, and Facilities will request the cancellation with the parking company on your behalf.
If you were not authorized to park, instructions for paying the ticket are printed on the ticket itself.
Question 15
Do I get an assigned parking spot?
No. All of the “Reserved for Emily Carr” parking spots on level P2 are first come, first served, with the exception of the spots reserved for visitors. There are no assigned parking spots — your access is registered to your licence plate, not to a stall.
Question 16
Do we have guest or visitor parking?
Yes. Visitor parking spaces 205–216 on level P2 are reserved for visitors and guests. If you are hosting a guest, submit a Request Service with the visitor’s name, the date of the visit, expected arrival and departure times, the duration of parking required, and vehicle details if known. Submit as early as possible — visitor parking is limited and is not guaranteed.
Question 17
Can I park at the loading dock?
Temporary parking at the loading dock must be pre-approved by Facilities. Even if you are parking for a short time you must confirm with Shipping or Facilities prior to parking to prevent being towed.
Question 18
Can I leave my car in the parking lot while I’m on vacation?
Occasional overnight parking is allowed in the parking lot, but you cannot leave your vehicle for several days while you are away.
Question 19
How long can I leave my vehicle in the parking lot?
The parking lot is not meant for vehicle storage. If you anticipate needing to leave your vehicle for more than 24 hours, please contact Facilities by submitting a Request Service.
Question 20
What time does the parking garage gate close?
The parking garage opens at 6:00 a.m. and closes at 11:30 p.m. If you need to get into the garage outside these hours, ECU Security can assist you with access. If you need to access the parking garage regularly outside these hours, submit a Request Service to Facilities for a parking fob.
Question 21
Will I be locked in the garage if I work late?
You will not be locked in the garage. The gate will open as you drive towards it, so you can always exit the parking lot.
Question 22
How do I get into the parking garage when the gate is closed?
If you have to arrive in the parking lot late in the evening after the gate is closed, you can request a fob from Facilities that will open the parking gate. The fob reader is located halfway down the ramp on the left side.
Question 23
Does Emily Carr have accessible parking spots?
Accessible parking spots are located on level P1 near the entry ramp. These spots are not part of the Emily Carr reserved allocation and are subject to daily or hourly fees. If you have employee parking access and need to use an accessible stall, contact Facilities by submitting a Request Service so your arrangement can be noted.
