Avoid it when..
|
Explanation
|
| You are placing an emergency 911 call. |
- Wi‑Fi calling may not automatically provide your precise location.
- Especially risky if:
- you’re traveling.
- your address hasn’t been updated with your carrier.
- you’re on hotel or public Wi‑Fi.
|
| You are using public, unsecured, or unstable Wi‑Fi. |
- Risk of call drops or delays.
- Potential traffic inspection (low risk, but not zero).
|
| You are physically moving around (e.g., walking, driving). |
When you move around, your phone keeps losing and re‑establishing Wi‑Fi connections.
- Wi‑Fi can’t hand off calls smoothly the way cellular networks can.
- This results in drops, glitches, or one‑way audio.
|
| Your battery is low. |
Wi‑Fi calling can use more battery than cellular, especially when the signal is weak.

Step 1: Switch 5G to LTE
- Open Settings and tap Connections.
- Tap Mobile networks.
- Select Network mode.
- Choose LTE (auto connect). This prevents the phone from constantly searching for a weak 5G signal.
Step 2: Activate Wi-Fi Calling
- Go back to Settings > Connections.
- Tap the text Wi-Fi Calling (not just the toggle).
- Switch the toggle to On.
- Pro Tip: If your signal is truly terrible, look for Calling preference within this menu and set it to "Prefer Wi-Fi" so the phone doesn't even try to use the weak cellular tower.
