When to avoid Wi-Fi calling

Avoid it when..
Explanation
You are placing an emergency 911 call.
  • Wi‑Fi calling may not automatically provide your precise location.
  • Especially risky if:
    • you’re traveling.
    • your address hasn’t been updated with your carrier.
    • you’re on hotel or public Wi‑Fi.
You are using public, unsecured, or unstable Wi‑Fi.
  • Risk of call drops or delays.
  • Potential traffic inspection (low risk, but not zero).
You are physically moving around (e.g., walking, driving).

When you move around, your phone keeps losing and re‑establishing Wi‑Fi connections.

  • Wi‑Fi can’t hand off calls smoothly the way cellular networks can.
  • This results in drops, glitches, or one‑way audio.
Your battery is low.

Wi‑Fi calling can use more battery than cellular, especially when the signal is weak.

Step 1: Switch 5G to LTE

  1. Open Settings and tap Connections.
  2. Tap Mobile networks.

Step 2: Activate Wi-Fi Calling

  1. Go back to Settings > Connections.
  2. Tap the text Wi-Fi Calling (not just the toggle).
  3. Switch the toggle to On.
  4. Pro Tip: If your signal is truly terrible, look for Calling preference within this menu and set it to "Prefer Wi-Fi" so the phone doesn't even try to use the weak cellular tower.
