How to Use Authenticator App (from 2Stable) on a macOS Computer

Overview

The Authenticator App by 2Stable is a free, 2-Factor Authentication (2FA) solution that is supported at ECU.

It is recommended for individuals who

  • do not have smart phone capable of running the preferred Microsoft Authenticator app
  • have ongoing access to a macOS laptop or desktop computer
Note  - This solution requires administrative rights to install software on your macOS device. Individuals who do not have a smart phone or access to a macOS device should contact IT Services to discuss alternatives.

Instructions

 

Step 1:

Install the app on your macOS device:

  • You will be prompted to open the link in the Mac App Store.
  • Follow the prompts to Get and Install the application.
  • You will need local administrative credentials on the device.

Step 2:

Click Create a new vault.

 

Click Continue when prompted.

Step 3:

Exit when prompted to upgrade to the paid version.

 

This will not close the app, it will only the advertisement to upgrade.

Step 4:

Create and confirm a new password for this app.

Step 5:

Enable Touch ID for an easier experience.

 

  • Touch ID is available on most newer macOS devices.
  • If you do not have TouchID already enabled, skip this step.

Step 6:

Use a browser to sign in at https://aka.ms/mfasetup.

 

  • You will be prompted to sign in with your ECU credentials.
  • If you have forgotten your password and have not yet registered 2FA you must contact IT Services for assistance.

Step 7:

Click Add sign-in method and choose Authenticator App from the drop-down.

 

  • Instead of choosing the default Microsoft Authenticator, choose I want to use a different authenticator app.
  • Continue to click Next until a QR code is displayed.

Step 9:

Use the Authenticator app to Scan QR Code.

 

  • Click the + icon on the lower right to open Scan QR Code.
  • Drag the Authenticator app window over the QR Code from your browser.
  • The app will automatically scan the code and your account will appear connected.
  • Click Save to continue.

Step 10:

On your browser, click Next to test an authentication prompt.

 

  • Your Authenticator app will display a 6-digit code.
  • Copy this to your clipboard and paste into your browser.

Step 11:

Your app is now registered for 2FA.

 

Upon entering the 6-digit code you, a banner should appear confirming that Authenticator app was successfully registered.

Step 12:

When signing into ECU systems you can now use the 6-digit verification code generated by Authenticator app.

 

  • Ignore the 2-digit code displayed during the sign-in process
  • Instead, click the option I can't use my Microsoft Authenticator app right now.
  • Choose Use a verification code.
  • Enter the code show in your Authenticator app and click Verify.
